Launching The BIOVAL: Horizon Europe Project Kicks Off in Sevilla to Pioneer Zero-Waste Biorefineries
June 24, 2026On 22 September 2026, BIOVAL, ALGAESOL and FLEXBY will come together at IDENER.AI’s facilities in Seville for the Clustering Kick-Off Meeting, “Transforming Waste into Sustainable Solutions”. The event will explore how European research is advancing circular, low-waste and zero-pollution production systems.
The meeting will bring together researchers, project partners and stakeholders to exchange knowledge on innovative approaches that transform waste streams, captured CO₂ and renewable biological resources into valuable products and cleaner industrial solutions.
Hosted at IDENER.AI in Seville, the event will open with remarks from Alejandra Hidalgo Domínguez, Communication and Dissemination Senior Assistant, followed by an introductory session on the importance of biovalorisation.
The programme will showcase the complementary work of the three Horizon Europe projects:
- The BIOVAL will present its cascade biorefinery approach, including baseline configurations, high-pressure gas fermentation metrics and progress towards technology scale-up. BIOVAL is developing a next-generation biorefinery that uses microalgae and bacterial gas fermentation to convert biomass waste and captured CO₂ into advanced biofuels, hydrogen, methane and high-value products such as pigments.
- FLEXBY will share insights into microwave-assisted pyrolysis unit configurations, feedstock versatility and downstream processing. Its contribution will highlight the potential of innovative thermochemical technologies to support more flexible and efficient resource recovery.
- ALGAESOL will present algae-based biofuel pathways, CO₂ capture integration, sustainability metrics and its progress towards industrial deployment. The session will explore how algae-based solutions can contribute to cleaner energy systems and circular carbon use.
A cross-cutting presentation led by Álvaro Cabeza, Project Coordinator, will connect the projects’ approaches and demonstrate the diversity of the European research programme. The session will focus on the shared potential of biorefining, circular resource use, carbon valorisation and sustainable technology development.
The morning will conclude with closing remarks and the handover of participation certificates to in-person attendees.
Through Transforming Waste into Sustainable Solutions, BIOVAL, ALGAESOL and FLEXBY are demonstrating how collaboration between complementary research projects can accelerate the transition towards a more circular, resource-efficient and sustainable Europe.
